Backstory
Cyrus came from a family of undertakers and was expected to continue the family business when his parents retired. A lot of their time spent at home was sneaking around the house, whether it to be to avoid a conversation or to prevent waking them up. There weren't any other kids to distract his parents attention with so they had to get creative at times. His skills got better and alongside it, the topic of training Cyrus began coming up more frequently.
Unsurprisingly, being known as the emo kid with the weird undertaker parents didn’t make you a lot of friends. They had a few friends but those ended when Cyrus mentioned where he lived and who his family was. A lot of the kids in the town bullied night to the point where he only hung out in his family’s graveyard or the forest behind it. It kept the bullies away at least because most of them were too scared to even come near the graveyard, let alone the forest behind it. Even with the bullies mostly taken care of, they’re marks never left. Cyrus started to build up walls and drove people out by acting the same way night was treated, anything to drive people away. They became cold and distant but their snarky and sarcastic side never left, it just became crueler.
Cyrus found his faith during one of the tours around his parents’ business when he was 8. They were telling him about why they did all this in the first place and talked of a god named Myrkul, the god of death. They talked about all the special love and care that goes into each person that comes here and even if Cyrus had no plans to take over, night couldn’t help be but curious about this god. He spent weeks pouring over books about this god and his history. His parents were so proud of him for taking an interest in their work and encouraged him to continue researching their practices. However when Cyrus grew older and reread those same teachings with new eyes, he began to reject Myrkul and his ideologies. They especially hated the reputation followers of Myrkul had, as evil cultists. Night didn’t think his parents were evil or cultists but the reputation didn’t help the bullying night already endured.
Eventually, Cyrus did find a goddess he could follow instead, Shar. She was the goddess of darkness and loss, also known as The Lady of Loss. They found it fitting, especially much better then some stupid cult-ish god that his parents loved. (Cyrus didn’t want to admit that they found Shar comforting because it felt like they’d already lost their parents even if they were technically alive.) Night didn’t tell their parents about their newfound faith and pretended they were still training to become a grave cleric of Myrkul. (They instead ended up as a death cleric for Shar so close enough). He kept his faith private for other reasons as well, stars knows what would happen if he told anyone. They got bullied plenty they didn’t need to give them anymore ammo to use against them.
Eventually the deadline night dreaded came, their 17th birthday, the start of their official training. It was now or never and Cyrus had no plans of becoming a emotionless husk like his parents so he ran, he ran like his life depended on it.
