There are 3 different types of people, regular, witches, and familiars. What type you are depends on your family. Two familiars will have a familiar kid, two witches will have a witch kid, etc. Cyrus is born into a family of familiars and he couldn't be dreading his fate more. Once fate decides a familiar is ready they're assigned to a witch to help amplify their magic and in turn, their own magic properties will get better. Cyrus is assigned Juniper, a water witch in the small town of Grim's Maw. It goes as well as you'd expect for a disgruntled cat and a busy witch with no time to take care of said cat.

A familiar who is chosen to be Juniper's companion. He's not happy about it. He thought he could get away from the whole ritual by running away but fate had other plans. He'd been chosen to be her familiar weather he liked it or not.

Juniper was a humble witch who runs her shop and cares for her younger sibling. She wasn't anything special, just had an interest in magic and studied it. She wanted to find a cure for whatever plagues her younger sibling. She certainly wasn't expecting a soaking wet black cat to show up at her door. Just one more thing to add to add to the list of things she has to deal with.
